The Bethany Public Schools Board voted to add a certified assistant band director and a teaching-support position for orchestra during its April 2024 meeting.
Band director Mr. Sharp told the board the program carries a large out-of-hours workload — ‘‘25 to 30 hours each game each week that it's a home game’’ and ‘‘45 to 50 public performances every year’’ — and that a certified assistant would allow the program to distribute teaching and logistical duties more effectively. Board members applauded the band’s recent growth and community visibility and said the certified position would provide continuity compared with a support aide role, which they said typically sees higher turnover.
Separately, staff and board members discussed adding a support position for orchestra to enable sectionals, tuning and other small-group instruction that the current teacher cannot always run while supervising the full class. Staff said the role could create capacity to explore returning kindergarten orchestra depending on scheduling.
Both items were put to roll-call votes and carried. The board approved the certified assistant band director (item 9) and the orchestra support position (item 10) by recorded votes.
Board members and staff framed the moves as investments in program quality and student opportunities rather than immediate large-budget expansions. Details about salary, job descriptions and when the positions will be posted were not specified during the meeting and will be finalized by district HR and administration.
The approvals mean the district can begin recruiting for the positions and adjust scheduling and budgets as needed in the coming weeks.
