The Toledo City School District board adopted a resolution formally recognizing May as Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month and affirmed the district’s commitment to teaching AAPI history and culture.
Board member Sheena Barnes read the resolution aloud, citing examples of contributions by Asian American and Pacific Islander Americans in areas including infrastructure, medicine, education, and athletics. The resolution states the board’s intent to celebrate the district’s diversity and to integrate AAPI history into instruction.
Trustees thanked the legal team for drafting the language and discussed the district’s ongoing work on equity, curriculum and inclusive representation in instructional materials. After a brief discussion, the motion to adopt the resolution was seconded and approved by roll call with recorded 'Yes' votes.
What’s next: The board directed curriculum staff to begin work to include AAPI content and said the resolution is effective immediately.
