The U.S. Commission on Civil Rights voted unanimously on Dec. 13, 2024, to adopt planning documents for a 2025 briefing on language access for individuals with limited English proficiency. Chair Rochelle Garza introduced the materials circulated by the Office of Civil Rights Evaluation and moved to adopt the research plan, outline and timeline.
Commissioner McIntyre thanked staff and commissioners for their work on the documents, saying, “I just wanted to thank everyone for their work on this, especially the staff and all of my colleagues on the commission for their support and insight onto this topic.” Following brief remarks and no proposed amendments, the commission conducted a roll-call vote and approved the planning documents unanimously.
The adopted materials will guide the commission’s 2025 briefing on access barriers and potential remedies for limited-English-proficiency communities. The chair said commissioners look forward to the resulting report and next steps from the Office of Civil Rights Evaluation.
The commission moved on to the staff director’s brief monthly report and then adjourned the business portion of the meeting to reconvene later for a public listening session.
