The Maumee City Council finance committee voted Feb. 25 to recommend raising the income eligibility for the city’s senior utility discount from 225% to 250% of the federal poverty level and to increase the discount rate, a measure staff described as roughly doubling the current benefit.
Speaker 2 told the committee the change would align the program with the income levels originally intended for the policy and said the adjustment would increase the discount “from generally doubling it from 12% to 24%.” Speaker 3, who moved the recommendation to council, said the change would apply to seniors 65 and older and to those who are totally and permanently disabled, and that the change would be effective for bills due March 2, 2026. Speaker 1 seconded the motion.
A roll-call vote followed and committee members present — Barrow, Gonzales and Koppelmeyer — voted to approve the recommendation. The committee’s recommendation now goes to full council for final action.
City staff did not provide a fiscal estimate for the change during the meeting. Committee members asked for the change to be recorded as a recommendation to council and did not finalize implementation details beyond the effective date noted in committee discussion.
