Several downtown business owners and residents asked the Marshfield Common Council on Feb. 24 to improve downtown snow removal and to protect programming at Wenzel Plaza.
John Tracy, owner of Uptown Coffee Company at 211 South Central Avenue, told the council that recent snow plowing left on‑street parking stalls on Central Avenue unusable, forcing customers to go elsewhere. "Basically, the spaces were unusable," Tracy said, describing photographs he sent the mayor. He said staff need to "do a better job of cleaning all of those parking spaces" so small businesses can attract foot traffic.
Sarah Venske (listed in the transcript as "Sarah Venske"), of 907 Erickson Avenue, said the blocked parking created accessibility problems for her husband, who walks with a cane, and for other customers needing close access. "Very Central Avenue, very inaccessible for him," she said, noting that the condition prevented them from patronizing downtown businesses.
Denise Son (identified in the record as Denise Son with Mackey) spoke on behalf of the downtown business community and described immediate revenue impacts from the weekend's snow-plowing problems. "Once snow removal falls short, the impact is immediate and costly," she said, and asked the council for a more consistent and effective downtown snow-removal plan.
Several speakers also highlighted the role of Wenzel Plaza events in sustaining downtown activity. Vicky Tracy, who also represents Uptown Coffee, said the Friday night concert series draws "a couple 100 people" on some nights and asked council to maintain a designated events coordinator position so programming does not fall through. She praised Nikki Anderson's work coordinating events and asked that Visit Marshfield and Park & Rec have clear points of contact for plaza programming.
What happens next: Council members asked staff to prepare a Streets or town‑hall presentation addressing downtown snow-plowing policy and indicated they will follow up with Main Street and other downtown partners to develop solutions and public engagement.
