The Platteville Common Council on Feb. 24 honored Police Chief Doug McKinley for 34 years with the Platteville Police Department. Council President Barbara Dawes read a proclamation citing McKinley’s service since 1991 and noting that he served 21 years as police chief and led the department through the planning and transition into the current police station.
McKinley accepted the proclamation and thanked department staff and his family. “It’s been the honor of my professional career to call myself a Platteville police officer,” he said, adding that the department’s officers, dispatchers and support staff share the credit for the department’s accomplishments. He said he is confident that “Josh will take it to the next level and beyond.”
The proclamation noted that under McKinley’s leadership the department pursued and earned accreditation from the Wisconsin Law Enforcement Accreditation Group in 2021 and maintained that status thereafter. The council presented McKinley with a certificate of appreciation and a proclamation during the meeting’s presentations.
No formal personnel action was taken during the public portion of the meeting. The council later noted Josh’s selection as the department’s incoming chief during routine reports.
