ANNAPOLIS, Md. — The Senate of Maryland opened its Feb. 25 session with an invocation and musical performance before recognizing local teams and community organizations.
Reverend Doreen Robinson of Wayman Memorial AME Church delivered the invocation, asking lawmakers to "remember that every decision they make will impact real lives and real people," and to act with compassion and humility. The presiding officer asked that the prayer be journalized by unanimous consent.
Members welcomed the Morgan State University choir, which performed two spirituals for Black History Month. The chamber applauded the performance and the Black Caucus of Maryland, which arranged the visit.
The Senate read and recorded a resolution honoring the Winston Churchill High School varsity golf team for winning the 3A/4A Maryland State Golf Championship and singled out senior captain Zoe Cusack for winning the individual title by eight strokes. The clerk read the resolution and the chamber extended its congratulations in the record.
The Senate also read a resolution recognizing Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, North Atlantic Region for its advocacy and community service; the resolution was directed to be presented in February 2026. During that recognition the presiding officer made an offhand comment referencing U.S. Sen. Angela Alsobrooks that other members immediately asked to "strike from the record;" the presiding officer agreed to remove the remark.
Senators used the ceremonial portion of the day to introduce a range of guests in the gallery: chapter leaders and attendees for Alpha Kappa Alpha, the Winston Churchill team members, interns including Bevin Brotman, community leaders such as Eliza May Robinson (recognized on her 90th birthday), Bishop Carter of the ARC Church, the day’s visiting physician Erin Murray, and students from programs including the Elijah Cummings Youth Program, College Park Academy and FFA chapters.
The chamber’s ceremonial recognitions concluded with applause and thanks to the visitors and performers. The body then moved on to routine floor business and committee scheduling before adjourning.
The Senate is scheduled to reconvene at 10 a.m. on Feb. 26, 2026.
