A South Dakota House State Affairs committee recommended a due pass on Senate Bill 176, a measure to align the period after which ballots and other election materials may be destroyed when multiple elections occur at the same time.
The sponsor told the committee the bill is intended to synchronize the destruction schedule so that "the materials for those elections are all destroyed at the same time." County and local election officials supported the change as a uniform administrative fix. Leah Anderson, Minnehaha County auditor, testified online that she "thinks this is a great bill," endorsing the effort to make instructions and retention consistent across offices.
Representative Gosh moved the committee action and, after roll call, the clerk recorded 11 ayes, 1 nay and 1 excused. The chair announced the due-pass recommendation and that SB176 will go to the full House floor with that recommendation.
The committee heard no opposition and took no amendments. The bill’s proponents said the change is administrative and intended to reduce confusion in counties that hold multiple elections on the same date. The committee’s action advances the bill to the next stage of consideration in the legislative process.
