WISEBURN UNIFIED, Calif. — The Wiseburn Unified School District Board of Education on Feb. 24 unanimously adopted a revised board policy that sets procedures for how district staff should respond when law enforcement seeks student information.
The policy, approved 4–0 at a special meeting, includes several changes staff summarized as items “a” through “e,” focused on staff safety and operational clarity. The reading into the record described a new requirement that "there's 2 people that are a part of that response as opposed to 1 individual so that there's support or at least, a dialogue amongst the team so that the response could be provided." The board approved the version presented on the agenda.
Why it matters: The policy clarifies how district employees will handle requests from outside agencies and aims to reduce risks to staff and students when authorities ask for information or access at school sites. The adopted language also specifies coordination with the local law enforcement agencies that serve schools in the district.
What the policy says: Board materials and the staff summary specify that the district will require two staff members to participate in responses to law-enforcement requests for student information when those responses involve staff safety considerations. The presentation named the Hawthorne Police Department, the El Segundo Police Department and the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department as the local agencies the district will work with, depending on which department serves a particular school.
How the board acted: Staff presented a revised draft and moved to approve it; the motion was seconded and the board voted unanimously. Board membership in attendance for the vote was recorded earlier in the meeting as four members present and one absent; the presiding officer announced that the motion "carries 4 0." No public comments were recorded on the item.
Other board action at the meeting: The board also approved a revision to organizational documentation to adopt a certification of signatures related to onboarding the district's new CBO (Chief Business Officer). The board adopted the meeting agenda at the start of the session and adjourned after business concluded. All recorded votes at the meeting were unanimous (4–0).
What’s next: The board did not set a further date on this item at the meeting. The policy takes effect per the district's standard implementation process and will be available in board records; the meeting adjourned without additional public testimony on the item.
