The Washington County Government Operations committee met Feb. 24 and advanced several routine operational matters.
Personnel and internships: the county attorney described a budget‑neutral summer internship opportunity for a first‑year law student at UBM Law School and asked that the position be sunsetted in August and re‑argued in October if needed. Committee members reported the internship is roughly a $20,000 item; the committee voted to send the request to the Personnel committee (motion carried).
Property and foreclosure: officials reported a foreclosure‑related lawsuit filed against the county’s treasurer earlier in the week was dismissed that morning, which removes a legal hold and allows the treasurer to proceed with auctioning properties unless the decision is appealed.
Parks and capital projects: the parks representative said the state delivered about $25,000 in materials to Lauderdale Park for cabin rehabilitation and provided engineered plans; crews will begin work when weather allows.
Facilities and fuel logistics: discussion focused on demolition timing for a town building with on‑site diesel tanks. Officials raised concerns about emergency‑vehicle fueling, overtime and response distances if tanks are taken out of service, and coordination with National Grid and contractors. The committee discussed temporary fueling options and noted WEX fuel cards can be issued and take about a week to arrive; the county keeps emergency cards in multiple locations.
Travel, leave and personnel scheduling: the committee approved travel and attendance for four supervisors to a required training/conference (chair, vice chair, Abel Bryant and Bridal Campbell). It also approved a department head’s request to roll over 10 days of unused vacation for medical scheduling and scheduled employee evaluations for the following month.
Next steps: the personnel committee will consider the internship request; county staff will coordinate logistics for demo/fuel sequencing and confirm auction timetables following the lawsuit dismissal.
