GROSSE POINTE FARMS, Mich. — During council reports, a council member said the city will participate in regional advocacy against bills pending in Lansing that the speaker described as efforts to preempt local zoning authority.
The speaker said SEMCOG, the Michigan Township Association and the Michigan Municipal League are coordinating a “call to action” and that local officials have been asked to speak in a unified voice. The speaker said they would attend a press conference at a law office the following morning and encouraged other local officials to join.
“SEMC0G is working with the Michigan Township Association and also with MML,” the speaker said in the meeting record, urging coordinated opposition and noting the bills address housing availability and local regulatory control. The speaker characterized the measures as a state attempt to tell local governments how to perform zoning functions and said the effort included bipartisan sponsorship at the state level.
Council did not formalize a new municipal position during the meeting but the announcement signals intent to participate in regional advocacy and public comment in advance of legislative action in Lansing.
