Mona City Council approved a five-year cooperative agreement with the Division of Forestry, Fire and State Lands and adopted the International Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) Code during its regular meeting.
A city staff member summarized the agreement as a new state-level mechanism that allows the Division of Forestry, Fire and State Lands to cover financial obligations for delegated wildland fires on behalf of the municipality if the city meets program requirements. "Currently, counties and municipalities are responsible for all costs associated with wildland fire," the staff member said, adding the contract is five years in duration and includes required map approval and an implementing ordinance.
Council members moved and seconded approval of Resolution 2026-4, which the staff member said authorizes acceptance of the program map and the cooperative agreement. The council approved the resolution by voice vote. Immediately afterward the council moved to adopt Ordinance 2026-5, formally incorporating the International Wildland-Urban Interface Code into Mona City’s municipal code; that ordinance was also approved by voice vote.
The staff member advised the council that adopting the resolution and ordinance completes the local steps required to participate in the state program but that municipal compliance with the program’s checklist is necessary for the Division to assume financial responsibility for delegated fires. The ordinance text and the longer implementing materials were provided to council members in the meeting packet, and staff noted those materials are extensive.
Next steps noted at the meeting include finalizing the ordinance language in the municipal code and tracking any compliance items the city must meet to be eligible for state-covered costs in the event of a delegated wildland fire.
