Mariposa County’s Creative Placemaking Committee heard an update that the Mariposa County Arts Council has selected artists for a pilot artist-in-residence program funded by Arts in Parks California, with residencies beginning in March.
Ava Burns, who spoke for the Arts Council during the meeting, said the residencies are designed as short retreats focused on the Creek Parkway and include public engagement: “They can just come and stay here for a couple of weeks and do their art, and they will be sharing it, and they'll be doing talks and things like that.” Burns said artists will stay locally (she identified the accommodations as Vacation Cottages) and that local hosts and sponsors—including a local studio space—will support their work. Lunches will be provided by a local donor during the residency, Burns added.
Committee members asked about copyright and use of work created during residencies. Burns said the artists retain copyright, though “the way it usually works is that artists will give us the rights to use certain pieces for promotion,” and emphasized the residencies are producing artist projects for their own portfolios rather than permanent public art.
Separately, the committee discussed a public-art mapping project led by Ben Ogan (GIS). The mapping effort aims to compile coordinates of public art into the county database and push them to tourism platforms including Google Maps and Wander Maps so residents and visitors can locate works more easily. Burns and a committee member noted coordination with the county visitor center to ensure staff can provide accurate directions.
Members also heard that the county’s public-art review process is temporarily on hold while the Board and planning commission consider changes to the county’s development code that add provisions on murals and public-art approvals. A staff member said the draft code language appears stricter than what the committee had proposed and that the committee will revisit the review process after the code updates are resolved.
The committee was asked to continue coordinating with Clay at the Arts Council on fabricator plans for creek installations and to plan next steps for the mapping project when GIS updates are available.
