The district’s Director of Maintenance briefed the board on enforcement of Senate Bill 112, known in discussion as the Childhood Safety Act, saying the state is beginning to require certified inspections of exterior and fire doors.
Speaker 1 said inspectors will be certified through the state and will examine door operation, hinges and mechanical opening/locking devices. He told the board the inspection cost is likely to range from about $25 to $125 per door and that inspections appear to be recurring; he said two district maintenance staff will attend an overview course to learn inspection expectations.
Board members asked whether internal staff may be certified to perform inspections; the director said state certification is part of the conversation but that details are not yet finalized. "They have to be a certified through my understanding is through the state," he said. The director emphasized the district is beginning internal work to catalog doors and plan for possible vendor inspections.
Implications: a campus with many exterior doors could face material inspection costs if vendors are used; the board asked administration to keep the group informed and to bring updates to future meetings.
Next steps: maintenance will continue to compile a list of doors, pursue training for two staff members and consult vendors to determine inspection timing and cost estimates before enforcement requires certificates.
