The Jackson County Commission voted Feb. 23 to appoint Samuel Houston to fill an unexpired seat on the Department of Human Resources board.
The commission’s presiding official read a list of nine applicants for one unexpired term — Alicia Woodrow, Michael Proctor, Heather Andrews, Tanya Newman, Tony Baker, Theresa Johnson, Corey Palmer, John Crabtree and Samuel Houston. Speaker 5 nominated Samuel Houston; the nomination was seconded and the commission held a roll-call vote. Commissioners recorded “Yes” from Commissioner Goldings, Commissioner Kenner and Commissioner McBride, and the appointment was announced as approved.
Samuel Houston is identified in the meeting materials as principal of Stevenson Elementary School and a longtime educator with prior service on the Jackson County Water Authority Board. The commission did not provide an exact length for the unexpired term during the meeting; meeting participants noted the packet did not specify the remaining term length.
The commission thanked all applicants for applying; no alternatives or amendments to the nomination were offered during the vote. The appointment was the principal substantive action taken during the meeting’s new‑business segment.
