A committee unanimously approved an amended veterans specialty license plate bill after a Department of Revenue representative described implementation needs for new plates.
Presenter (Unidentified Speaker 9) said the bill had previously been passed quickly and lacked an effective date; the presenter moved an amendment to set the effective date to Jan. 1, 2027. Department of Revenue staff then told the committee the agency prefers an implementation window to prepare IT systems, distribution and to ensure people are not charged in error for specialty plates with veteran components.
A Department of Revenue speaker told members that many specialty plates require additional IT backing and distribution planning; the speaker described such work as necessary “to make sure we're getting it out the right way and that people aren't paying for a plate they're not supposed to.”
Regarding cost, a Department of Revenue representative said the $25 amount in the bill is the standard plate fee in the state and is reduced compared with specialty‑tag fees, which are typically $10 more.
The committee approved the amendment (effective date 01/01/2027) by voice vote and reported the bill favorably.
Ending: The bill passed out of committee as amended; the Department of Revenue and sponsor will proceed with implementation planning for the Jan. 1, 2027 effective date.
