Danville school board approves routine items, accepts $530,852 math grant and waives additional makeup days

The Danville Public Schools board on Feb. 12 handled multiple routine and action items, including approval of minutes and consent measures, several proclamations, acceptance of a VDOE math grant and a request to use two teacher workdays as makeup instructional time.

Minutes and consent items: The board approved the minutes of its Jan. 22, 2026 regular meeting (motion by Dr. Williams; second by Miss Avery) and approved consent items including a School Board Clerk Appreciation Week proclamation. Clerk calls recorded verbal affirmations from board members.

Proclamations and recognitions: The board recognized Dr. Angela Harrison as Region 6 Superintendent of the Year and proclaimed February 2026 as School Board Appreciation Month, Black History Month, Career and Technical Education Month and National School Counseling Week. Staff and students presented certificates and small student-led recognitions.

Math Innovation Grant: The board accepted the VDOE Math Innovation Grant for which Danville Public Schools applied and was awarded the full amount requested: $530,852. The funds were described as supporting summer 2026 professional learning on high-quality instructional materials for K–12 mathematics and associated teacher stipends. Motion to approve the grant was made by Miss Cunningham and seconded by Miss April; the clerk recorded board members voting in the affirmative.

Makeup days and waiver: District staff requested approval to use May 26 and May 27 (scheduled teacher workdays) as half‑day instructional makeup time and to waive any additional makeup days, noting the district has already exceeded Virginia’s minimum seat‑time requirement (990 instructional hours). Motion was made by Dr. Williams and seconded by Miss McLaughlin; board members voted yes.

Personnel and policy: The board approved personnel recommendations (with three items pulled for separate consideration) and annually approved policy BDD on electronic participation. Clerk roll calls for personnel and policy items recorded verbal 'Yes' responses from multiple members.

What’s next: The district will return Feb. 19 to request formal approval and funding for the ELA textbook adoption. Board members also requested additional presentations on special education referral/eligibility, the ASP program, and student-level CIS success stories in upcoming work sessions or budget meetings.
