The Sheriff’s Office presented its annual AB 481 military‑equipment use policy and inventory. Staff said additions this year include distraction devices ("flashbangs") with lower fire risk and two Sprinter command vans used during evacuations. The office said it will retire a surplus MRAP after taking delivery of a Bearcat armoured command vehicle.
Presenters explained equipment changes are guided by best practices and operational needs, and staff said the report and policy are posted on the Sheriff’s Office website. The Sheriff’s Office announced a public equipment viewing on May 2 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Root Center.
Members of the public used the AB 481 public‑hearing opportunity to question the accumulation of military‑style equipment and urged caution against militarization; speakers also raised maintenance, training and procurement transparency concerns. Some supervisors acknowledged the public concerns but supported the Sheriff's explanation that updated vehicles and less‑lethal changes are intended for operational flexibility and public safety. The Board accepted the report by roll call and the staff said a follow‑up ordinance will appear on a future consent calendar.
