House adjourns in memory of Delegate Barry D. Knight after extended tributes

The Virginia House of Delegates on Feb. 20 moved and agreed to adjourn in memory of the late Delegate Barry D. Knight, with a series of tributes from colleagues across the chamber.

Delegate Leftwich (Chesapeake) moved that the House adjourn in Knight’s memory and delivered an extended eulogy describing Knight’s life as a farmer, pilot and long-serving legislator and appropriations leader. Leftwich noted Knight’s tenure as chair of the House Appropriations Committee and his role shaping Virginia’s budget, and asked the House to honor his memory when it adjourned.

Multiple delegates followed with personal recollections. Speakers highlighted Knight’s ability to bring colleagues together across differences, his practical knowledge of budgeting and stewardship, his contributions to local projects and institutions, and his devotion to family and faith. Anecdotes ranged from flying a helicopter to hands-on farming and constituent service.

The motion to adjourn in Knight’s honor was agreed to by the body. Delegates used points of personal privilege throughout the morning hour to remember Knight; the tributes emphasized his bipartisan relationships, long legislative service and the personal qualities that colleagues said shaped his public work.

The House then continued with routine business before adjourning to reconvene on Monday at noon.
