Members of the Virginia House of Delegates used the morning hour on Feb. 20 for ceremonial introductions and announcements. Delegate Carr asked the chamber to welcome members of the Junior League of Richmond and moved adoption of House Joint Resolution 142 commending the organization; the motion was agreed to on the floor.
Other introductions and announcements included: guests from New Jerusalem Ministries (introduced by a delegate from the floor), a visiting cohort from the Minority Political Leadership Institute at Virginia Commonwealth University (introduced by Delegate Dudley Price, Newport News), an invitation to the Farm Bureau’s 100th-anniversary reception on Feb. 26 (Delegate Pence), and a reminder about the Feb. 23 Capital Square Classic basketball fundraiser for the Massey Cancer Center (Delegate McQueen).
Delegate Cherry noted Feb. 20 as National Cherry Pie Day and invited members to sample pie in the break room. Delegate Fowler introduced Virginia Beach residents in the gallery who were participating in a day of action, including members of the Virginia Beach NAACP and local affordable-housing groups. The clerk recorded members on leave and outlined procedural items for the remainder of the day.
These items were ceremonial or informational and did not, on the floor, change law or appropriate funds; motions to honor the Junior League and to adjourn in memory of Delegate Knight were the primary formal ceremonial actions recorded during the morning hour.
