Principal Barrientos and Aero Vista student leaders presented a showcase to the Brea Olinda Unified School District board on April 18, describing programs, outcomes and family engagement efforts.
Barrientos emphasized the site's dual‑language immersion work and noted that Aero Vista is the district’s only AVID‑certified elementary program for grades TK–6. He reported that the school’s library inventory grew by 2,511 books since 2021, roughly 530 of which are Spanish‑language selections added to support dual‑language students.
Student council members outlined leadership activities, spirit weeks and community events, and closed with a chant illustrating their school values. School counselor Vanessa Cardenas summarized tiered social‑emotional supports: she cited 106 classroom prevention lessons, 12 small groups, 261 one‑on‑one sessions (two‑hundred‑sixty‑one), 188 check‑ins, 50 student self‑referrals, 15 external referrals through Care Solace and four risk assessments performed this year.
Barrientos also reviewed academic indicators: a reported chronic absenteeism rate of 25.4 percent for the 2022–23 year and progress on English‑learner proficiency metrics and iReady diagnostics. He and the principal team connected demographic trends (62.2 percent Hispanic/Latine enrollment at the site) to curricular decisions and library diversification.
Trustees and attendees praised the student presentation, and staff noted outreach efforts such as parent cafecitos and a bilingual PTO representative aimed at improving family engagement. The board’s packet includes the full data slides and links to the district’s Data Quest sources.
