Elizabeth Moss, speaking for the Vancouver-area library system, told the Sunnyside Neighborhood Association that the library offers more than books: a newly launched "Library of Things," digital resources and community programs.
"It is a library of things," Moss said, describing items such as ukuleles, keyboards, telescopes, sewing machines and pickleball sets that patrons can check out. Moss said the initiative launched in November with about 40 items and has had strong demand; items circulate via the library catalog and are held at branches or an operations center on Grand Boulevard for maintenance and redistribution.
Moss reviewed programs and services that neighborhood residents can use: family and baby story times, play-to-learn events, a tax-assistance partnership at the 3 Creeks branch (appointment-based for qualifying residents during Feb. 1 April 15), museum and Washington State Park passes, meeting-room reservations (a 58-person room available with caveats) and free printing and faxing allowances.
The library also offers digital resources such as Consumer Reports through the library's A Z databases (accessible with a library card), Kanopy and Hoopla streaming services, New York Times and Wall Street Journal temporary access codes, Ancestry (in-library access) and online tutoring and LinkedIn Learning classes. Moss said patrons can reserve materials online or ask staff for assistance.
Moss encouraged residents to contact their local branch for handouts, brochures and help reserving meeting rooms or passes.
The library presentation concluded with an offer to provide attendees with printed handouts and a reminder that many programs and resources are free to cardholders.
