The commission discussed details for a new summer volunteer tree-maintenance program and logistical options for wood-chip distribution.
Staff said approximately 16 people have expressed interest in volunteering; volunteers would be assigned zones and provided a guidance sheet covering mulching, tree stakes and watering. Commissioners proposed using Kent’s mapping to assign volunteers by neighborhood and identified the target maintenance cohort as trees 1–3 years old.
Members raised concerns about community chip drops — including inconsistent chip quality, trash in loads and the operational burden of removing unused chips — and discussed potential vendor partners (Cotton Tree Service, Bartlett/C L Frank, Werner Tree) who might deliver manageable, higher-quality batches for a fee. As fallback locations, staff suggested the DPW yards at Locust Street and Spring Grove or a paved parking lot (for easy cleanup and pickup). Staff said they would contact vendors to explore options and report back.
Commissioners also discussed duplicate entries in the tree inventory and the need for a cleaned volunteer/tracker list; staff committed to sending a 20–25 tree list for volunteer assignments and to update the tracker.
