Philomath’s Tree Board and public-works staff outlined plans for an Arbor Day event set for April 3 that will bring schoolchildren to a multi-station program, distribute seedlings, and include a public tree-planting tied to a library proclamation.
Staff said the school component would run in the morning for third-graders and kindergarteners and that organizers expect to provide about five stations so groups won’t sit idle. The city is still tracking a shipment of tree seedlings and plans to distribute species-identified containers or labels so parents know what species their child received and how to plant it. A staff member proposed a brief, bilingual or QR-linked flyer with a photo and simple planting instructions to be attached to seedling pots.
Organizers discussed whether to stage a formal planting ceremony (golden shovels) during an afternoon event at the library so the mayor or city manager could read an Arbor Day proclamation; staff said the ceremony would be open to the public and that the tree planted there could be tied to the Tree City recognition for the city.
Board members also discussed incentives to encourage planting at home—ideas included a photo-based hashtag raffle or small local-business prizes such as pizza—but staff raised privacy concerns about posting photos of children and suggested asking families to post tree-only pictures or grant permission before reposting. Volunteers offered to pre-stuff labeled bags and prepare stickers/pots ahead of the event to avoid delays during the school visits.
On follow-up from prior giveaways, staff and volunteers said many distributed seedlings did not take root in participants’ yards; members recommended clearer labeling, better parent-facing instructions, and a centralized point person for follow-up to increase planting rates.
Organizers did not record any formal vote; board members assigned preparatory tasks to staff and volunteers and asked for a finalized logistics plan before the event.
