Marshfield's adult volleyball league draws dozens of teams to Oak Avenue Community Center

On winter nights in Marshfield, the Oak Avenue Community Center "comes alive" with the adult volleyball league organized through Marshfield Parks and Recreation, a speaker in the recording said.

The league, now one of Parks and Recreation's longest-running programs, fields roughly 35 to 40 teams each season and brings hundreds of adults to the center weekly. "More than 35 to 40 teams participate each season, bringing together hundreds of adults every week," Speaker 1 said.

Speaker 2, who identifies work responsibilities with Parks and Recreation in the recording, outlined the league's structure: "There's between women's and corec, power fours, men's, and then depending on the year, we have different number of teams in each of those leagues. But it's 16 weeks for each team," they said. The format includes single-team registrations and mixed formats such as power fours (two players of each gender on the court).

Parks and Recreation handles registrations and scheduling for the program. "So for park and rec what we'll do is we'll take, obviously, we'll take all the registrations, we'll create all the schedules," Speaker 2 said, noting the department organizes divisions based on the number of teams and accommodates certain day requests.

Players described the league as competitive but primarily recreational. One participant, identified in the recording as Speaker 3, described teammates and night schedules, while Speaker 4 recalled local volleyball history in Central Wisconsin and how the sport drew players through venues such as the armory.

The program includes a prize component but, participants and staff said, the emphasis is on exercise, social connection and an affordable local activity. "We provide a prize for this league, but it's more about the recreation than the competition," Speaker 2 said. The recording also notes that teams and players travel from nearby towns such as Golby and Stevens Point to take part, indicating the league's regional draw.

Marshfield Parks and Recreation lists the season as 16 weeks per team and organizes leagues annually based on registration levels. The recording does not specify registration deadlines, fees, or exact season start dates.
