Madison County supervisors discussed a proposed expansion of the county's camera system and declined to approve a new resolution or change order until staff provides a full inventory and analysis of platforms, server capacity and support costs.
Board members said a previously quoted $12,000 camera project now faces change orders that push costs to about $22,000, and they questioned whether purchaser/vendor selection (including Johnson Controls) is cost-effective. Supervisors emphasized that different buildings currently use different camera platforms and asked whether the newer server installed for recent upgrades could host additional cameras rather than buying a separate server.
Chip (staff) was asked to prepare an executive summary covering the age and life expectancy of current camera hardware, compatibility across buildings, whether the existing newer server can be used for a consolidated system, vendor hourly support rates and projected 5- to 10-year replacement needs. Several supervisors recommended an RFP only after that inventory and life-cycle analysis is complete, and the board agreed to postpone any purchase or change order until staff returns with the requested data.
No new procurement resolution was approved at the meeting. The board said it wants clear documentation for decisions involving security infrastructure, including an inventory and justification for any higher-cost vendor selections.
