League urges quick response to action alerts as session speeds up

The Utah League of Cities and Towns urged members to watch for action alerts and to contact their legislators quickly as the legislative session reaches its final two weeks. An unidentified speaker delivering the group's end-of-week update said bills move more quickly at this stage and the League will mobilize members when votes are imminent.

"If you see an action alert email, we need you to move quickly and reach out to your legislators with those talking points," the unidentified speaker said, adding that the League will supply talking points to make outreach easier.

The update distinguished between two types of notices. The speaker said an "action alert" indicates a bill is up for an imminent vote and requires immediate contact, while an "action needed" note in a nightly email indicates the League wants members to reach out but the item is not coming up for a vote immediately. The speaker also cautioned that some bills can appear "out of nowhere" late in the process and require rapid mobilization.

Members were told to check nightly emails and the League’s website for alerts and sign-up information, and to bring bills they want the League to track to the Legislative Policy Committee meeting on Monday for further discussion.
