Rutherford County Schools' board approved a midyear budget amendment that increases both current-year revenue and expenditures by $880,000 without using fund balance, and approved several facilities and program requests at Thursday's meeting.
Finance staff and the director explained the amendment updates state grant allocations and cleans up expenditure lines midyear to avoid larger year-end adjustments. "I like to do it midyear so I don't have to do a huge cleanup at year end," the finance presenter said, describing the practice as an accuracy and transparency measure.
The board also approved a partnership for Smyrna Elementary with Taylor Farms to install a 12-by-20-foot greenhouse (not to exceed $25,000, no cost to the board), a request to name Riverdale High's track in honor of Coach Ricky Field, and a La Vergne High School softball scoreboard (not to exceed $20,000) funded with softball funds. Engineering reviewed each request and had no objections.
Separately, the board approved an updated job description for a student-information data analyst (additional responsibilities were added without a pay-scale change). The board approved these items by voice vote during the meeting.
Administrators said the district's budgeting work will continue ahead of the board retreat and that staff will present COLA and insurance assumptions as the budget process proceeds.
