At the Feb. 18 Douglas County Commission meeting the chair read a prepared statement addressing "heightened awareness and concern" among residents over the presence and actions of federal agents in Lawrence.
The commissioner said it was understandable that residents were worried and called for community care: "People in this county do show up for each other and support one another when in need," the statement said. The chair urged that county services remain accessible through multiple methods (online forms, phone assistance) and said the county administration would reaffirm that commitment.
Other commissioners responded by acknowledging residents' right to use their voices and noting the limits of county authority over federal actions. The remarks were framed as a public acknowledgment of community concern rather than a change in county policy or action.
