The Georgia House recognized Dr. Penny Elkins on Thursday as Mercer University's president and invited her to the floor to accept the chamber's commendation.
Representative Tangie Herring introduced Dr. Elkins, noting that Mercer serves "more than 9,000 students across campuses" and highlighting the university's economic contribution to the state. Herring described Elkins as Mercer's first female president and praised her background in education and institutional leadership.
Dr. Penny Elkins thanked the House and its representatives and said she accepted the presidency "with great humility" while pledging a focus on the student experience and community engagement. "I do take this helm with great humility, but laser focus on making the student experience the best that it can be," she said.
Members invited Dr. Elkins and her guests to the South Annie Room after the session for photos and further conversation. The recognition took place as part of a series of invited resolutions and ceremonial morning orders on the floor.
Why it matters: Mercer is a multi-campus institution with a presence in Macon and other cities; House recognition signals legislative appreciation for higher‑education institutions that report regional economic and workforce impact.
