The Virginia House of Delegates used its morning hour to adopt several ceremonial measures and to recognize numerous guests in the gallery.
Delegate Sullivan moved and the House adopted House Joint Resolution 152, commending the Pentagon Memorial Fund as the 25th remembrance of Sept. 11 approaches. Delegate Oates moved adoption of House Resolution 125 honoring Alice Barlow for national equestrian achievements; the resolution was agreed to by voice vote. Delegate Cousins moved adoption of House Joint Resolution 154 recognizing the Greater Richmond chapter of the Afro American Historical and Genealogical Society; members of the society and former Secretary Viola Baskerville were recognized on the floor and the resolution was adopted.
In a separate memorial item, the House adopted House Joint Resolution 153 commemorating the life and advocacy of Sincere B. Allah; speakers described his work on probation and sentencing reform and the challenges of reentry and mental health support. Delegates delivering tributes emphasized his role as an organizer and advocate and urged continued work on reentry supports.
Throughout the morning the House also introduced and welcomed visitors including students from George Mason University’s jurisprudence learning community, Christo-Ray Richmond High School, Hampton Roads Academy, Liberty University’s medical students, Virginia Military Institute cadets, participants in the Electric Cooperative Youth Tour, and several historic and community groups. Committee and caucus meeting times were announced before the House adjourned to reconvene the following day.
The transcript records adoption of these resolutions by voice vote; no roll-call tallies were recorded in the morning hour.
