The City of Las Vegas Art Commission on Feb. 19 approved the minutes of its Jan. 15 meeting and heard a calendar of upcoming exhibitions and public events. The motion to approve the minutes was made by Commissioner Clovin and seconded by Commissioner Chuck; after a roll call vote the chair recorded the motion as passing.
Chair Carmen Beals led the commission’s monthly report, promoting a series of near-term openings and receptions aimed at public engagement. Beals announced an opening reception for the annual Lunar New Year exhibition (Year of the Horse) later that day, Feb. 19, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Mayor’s Gallery at the historic 5th Street School, with light refreshments and Commissioner Craig Galati among the participating artists.
Beals also announced a 10 a.m. unveiling on Feb. 20 of Wayne Littlejohn’s installation 'Jean Genie' at the Shadow Lane entrance to the UNLV Dental School, where the public can view the work and hear from the artist. Additional events listed included a March 4 closing reception (6–8 p.m.) for a visual mixtape by Don Michael Junior at Charleston Heights Art Center Gallery and the March 12 opening (6–8 p.m.) of 'Rhythm and Resilience: Black Vegas' at the Civic Center Gallery, curated by Carmen Beals and narrated by Clay T. White; the exhibition runs through Aug. 20.
The chair directed members and the public to the department website for more information and encouraged attendance at the scheduled dedications and receptions. The meeting adjourned with commissioners noting they would attend the day’s Lunar New Year reception.
