Cultural-affairs staff told the City of Las Vegas Art Commission on Feb. 19 that several percent-for-the-arts projects are advancing on schedule, with one newly completed work and others moving through contracting and fabrication.
Laura Machado reported that the David Ryan sculpture 'Waiting on a Light on the Corner' (commissioned through Sound Exchange) passed inspections and is complete and installed at the corner of 3rd and Ogden. Staff encouraged commissioners and the public to view the finished work.
Staff said the Cliff Garden Studio sculpture has reached a fourth project milestone and fabricators are installing the exterior steel rods. Machado stated the sculpture is expected to be roughly 30 feet tall, with fabrication finishing by April and installation in Civic Plaza targeted for April 26; the dedication is planned for May 7, pending final checks.
Parker Arecki updated commissioners that the AMP Gateway and Arts District public-art project are in contracting and that a painting schedule will be set soon. The Ward 4 AMP project is in redesign with selected artists, and the Centennial Hills Park environmental tile mural is on schedule with evaluation-panel work and contracting underway.
Mary Sabo described ongoing condition assessments of the public-art collection, the conservation and graffiti-abatement contract work (noting focus on AMP utility cabinets in the Arts District), and an issued request for proposals for the Hears Park tile mural with stakeholder-approved design and contracting in progress. Staff also said they are finalizing the second part of Justin Favela’s contract to bring a permanent sculpture to East Las Vegas.
Staff reiterated that 'Jean Genie' on Shadow Lane has been installed and that a dedication ceremony is scheduled for the next morning at 10 a.m. The commission asked no substantive questions during the presentation and thanked staff for the updates. Staff were asked to prepare a municipal-code report about percent-for-the-arts funding and the commission’s definition of public art for a future agenda.
