Parent tells school board son's classmate made sustained lewd remarks to his 13‑year‑old daughter; district to follow up

During the meeting's public comment period, parent Matt Jones told the board his 13‑year‑old daughter experienced sustained sexualized harassment in a first‑period class and described graphic text evidence he said he supplied the district. Jones said two boys whispered lewd comments for about 30 minutes while the teacher lectured and that disciplinary action amounted to only one‑day absence for those students.

"My daughter didn't know what to do," Jones said, urging the district to strengthen student education about harassment, clarify reporting protocols, and consider different disciplinary responses. He said the same student behavior had earlier occurred in sixth grade and that prior teacher intervention had previously stopped the pattern on that occasion.

Superintendent Brenda Leon responded that district staff would follow up with the parent and review the incident. Leon said school staff had already been in touch and that district leaders take student safety and harassment concerns seriously.

Jones said he was not satisfied with the outcome and asked the board to consider systemic steps to educate boys and girls about harassment and to ensure students know how to report incidents.

The board did not take action at the meeting; Superintendent Leon said she would have staff contact the family for follow up.
