St. Johns County officials and residents gathered for a ribbon-cutting that celebrated a new inclusive playground known locally as the Field of Dreams and acknowledged a related investment in West Augustine’s health and wellness services. The project replaces temporary tents with a permanent concession stand, new parking and flush toilets that supporters said they had requested for 16 years.
“This project represents so much more than the new concession stand and restrooms,” a project spokesperson said, describing the Field of Dreams as “a place built on the belief that every child, regardless of ability, deserves the opportunity to play, belong, and thrive.” County speakers praised the design that accommodates children in wheelchairs and those with visual impairments and credited resident leadership and county land and funding allocations for making the site possible.
Speakers also used the event to spotlight the Wes Solenstein Health and Wellness Center in West Augustine, calling it a hub for prevention, access and wraparound services. A community leader said the center was built because residents “refused to accept the enormous inadequacies and the disproportionate access to health care” in the neighborhood and described the center’s programming as aimed at improving outcomes for children, seniors and families.
County officials framed the investments as part of broader priorities for community well-being. Parks and Recreation staff described the work as consistent with a regional parks plan that includes new parks and renovations, and residents and volunteers were recognized for long-term advocacy and operational support.
The ceremony closed with thanks to volunteers and officials. No formal vote or new ordinance was announced at the event; organizers directed residents to county resources for program information and volunteer opportunities.
