The Rhinebeck Zoning Board of Appeals voted Feb. 18 to designate Kara as deputy chair so she can act for the chairperson in his absence, formalizing a practice members said had informally occurred in the past.
Later in the meeting board members reviewed recent planning-board activity on the Rhinebeck Aerodrome proposal. Karen (board member) said she attended the Feb. 2 planning-board hearing and noted most of the aerodrome parcel sits in neighboring Red Hook but that portions and access roads affect Rhinebeck. Members raised concerns about traffic volumes on narrow local roads, potential safety when large or additional event traffic occurs, and noise from vintage, low-flying aircraft. One member said the aerodrome team is seeking year-round uses including exhibits and possibly a restaurant and liquor license, which could draw visitors outside traditional flight days.
Board members agreed to coordinate with the planning board, review the aerodrome's traffic study and, if appropriate, draft comments focusing on Rhinebeck road safety, signage and neighborhood character. Members asked staff to reach out to Melody at the planning board and to circulate any draft concerns by email.
The board also discussed that some applicants used AI to generate renderings and debated whether the ZBA should create a policy about accepting AI-generated materials. Members said AI can lower costs for respondents who cannot afford professional renderings, but they also raised concerns that AI imagery can add or omit features and suggested exploring a town-provided rendering resource or library assistance as a neutral tool.
What happens next: Kara will serve as deputy chair in the chair's absence; the board will consult with planning-board staff on the aerodrome project and may circulate draft comments; staff will explore options for guidance or resources related to AI-generated renderings.
