An unnamed city staff presenter told the Walnut Grove council that the body approved Resolution 20-26 to formalize the city’s commitment to youth safety and programming.
The resolution, presented as “a roadmap” to prioritize youth initiatives, says the city will work with partners including the school district, individual schools and the sheriff’s department to promote youth involvement and shore up vulnerabilities facing young people in the community. The presenter said a letter will be sent to businesses that may be affected before the next work session to flag that an ordinance could follow.
“[This resolution is] nearly a roadmap to show that we are prioritizing the youth community, that we're gonna work with partners such as the school district, individual schools, sheriff's department,” the staff presenter said during the discussion.
Council member Speaker 5 made the motion to approve Resolution 20-26; the presiding official called for members to indicate approval by raising hands, and the council moved forward after members signaled assent. No roll-call tally was given during the meeting.
The resolution is intended to guide future ordinance development and to create programs to increase youth engagement, with the council and staff signaling further outreach to schools and community partners. Staff said the intent is to keep youth issues a top priority and to use the resolution as a reference point when drafting any related ordinance.
The council completed the signature process the same evening and asked staff to circulate the promised notice to affected businesses before the next work session.
