The Washington State Senate unanimously adopted Senate Resolution 8688 on the floor, a ceremonial measure recognizing Washington’s dairy farms, their history and contributions to the state’s economy.
The resolution read on the floor cites the state’s dairy history (the first creamery in Cheney in 1880), notes dairies are present in 27 of Washington’s 39 counties, and states there are "nearly 260 family dairy farms in Washington state with approximately 257,000 dairy cows." The text also highlights industry organizations and the annual Dairy Day at the Legislature.
Senator Short moved adoption and praised dairy families and local initiatives including the Columbia Community Creamery. "It's so fun to see dairy kids with their animals during our fair," she said, and described the pride and stewardship of dairy communities.
Multiple senators spoke in support, sharing personal experience on dairy farms and commending the industry’s role in communities and local economies. Following the floor remarks, the President put the question; senators responded "aye," and the resolution was adopted. The President then recognized members of the Washington State Dairy Council, the Washington State Dairy Women's Organization, and the Washington State Dairy Ambassadors in the North Gallery.
The resolution is ceremonial; it does not change state policy but aims to acknowledge agricultural heritage and spotlight the dairy industry during the legislative session.
