Sugar Land approves $250,000 Fort Bend County sub-sponsorship to fund World Cup events

The Sugar Land City Council on Feb. 17 approved a $250,000 sub-sponsorship agreement with Fort Bend County to help fund World Cup–related programming and reduce the city's event activation costs. Allison Brooks, assistant director of tourism, said the county approved the sub-sponsorship on Jan. 22 and that the county began collecting a 2% hotel occupancy tax in 2024.

"Our first sub sponsorship of $250,000 with Fort Bend County was approved via County Commissioners Court on January 22," Brooks told the council, describing the funding as a way to offset the costs of delivering large-scale events and programming in Sugar Land.

Brooks said the funds will directly support official watch parties and related programming and provide partner benefits for the county, including "visibility at select World Cup related events, premium seating experiences at Smart Financial Center in Constellation Field, passes for VIP access at Houston Fan Festival, and VIP access to Sugar Land's official Host City viewing party." She recommended approval of the sub-sponsorship and a corresponding budget amendment to revenues and expenditures.

A council member moved to approve the agreement and the associated budget amendment; the motion passed on a unanimous vote of 7-0.

Item 7b (Sugar Land Town Square POA) was deferred to the Feb. 24 meeting and will not be presented or take public comment tonight.
