A representative of the Saint Charles History Museum asked the Committee of the Whole for $72,000 in city funding for FY2026–27, $12,000 more than the prior year, to maintain current staffing levels, create a part‑time education/outreach coordinator role and finish a basement storage renovation.
The museum representative said the organization serves as a de facto welcome center for visitors and highlighted recent programming metrics: the holiday gala sold out with 132 attendees and raised $61,352; Pickle Paradise attracted more than 1,000 attendees; the museum hosted school groups and adult‑education programming. The presenter said the museum has increased corporate partnerships and has applied to be recognized as a statewide research organization and the National Network to Freedom hub for the region, citing 12 verified Underground Railroad sites in Saint Charles.
Council members asked how the new part‑time position would work and where it would focus; the museum said the hire would coordinate with the Education Committee, increase school and tourism outreach, assist at events and help drive fundraising and marketing activity. A councilor suggested adding “History Museum and Welcome Center” to a new outdoor sign to clarify visitor services; the museum said the physical sign will read “Saint Charles History Museum,” though a separate visitor information sign was discussed in prior years.
The council voted to approve the $72,000 request on roll call.
