Dan and Tiffany Sipkis, who introduced themselves on the Made in Walker podcast as co-owners of Siciliano’s Market, said the family business moved to Walker about a year ago to gain space, parking and walkability that would let them expand retail offerings and host events.
"First off, it's all about the customer experience," Tiffany Sipkis said on the podcast, crediting predecessors Steve and Barb for a community-focused approach the new owners kept while adding new energy and services. The owners said they worked alongside the previous owners for months to "learn the ropes" before completing the transition.
The move to Lake Michigan Drive allowed the owners to install new walk-in coolers, expand tasting space and grow specialty sections. They said the store’s humidor is now roughly three times larger than at the old site and that cigar and spirits selections have increased substantially; the owners estimated the beer assortment at "over 1,000" different SKUs.
Siciliano’s also emphasized community programming. The owners described free public events, homebrew club partnerships, and an annual homebrew competition that draws about 150 entries judged by BJCP-certified judges. Local product partnerships cited on the podcast include Magnum Coffee, a local cheese purveyor, Grand Ice (local cocktail ice cubes) and Semi Freddo (Italian ice cream), all intended to create pairing experiences and highlight independent vendors.
Tiffany Sipkis said she also serves on the City of Walker’s downtown development authority for Standale and hopes her role will help local small businesses "have a voice in the direction that we go," particularly on matters that affect downtown merchants.
