The Indio City Council on Feb. 18 adopted Resolution No. 10548 restating the city’s policies on cooperation with federal immigration authorities and reaffirming commitments to public safety and community trust.
City attorney Steven Pacifico introduced the council‑initiated measure as a clarification that the city will comply with state law while prioritizing local public‑safety objectives. "It reaffirms the city's commitments to comply with state law and to pursue local priorities with local funding," Pacifico said during the council meeting.
Chief Brian Tully of the Indio Police Department told the council the department does not and cannot be involved in immigration enforcement. "When you call 911, we will respond. We will assess the situation. We will address any crime. We will address the needs of our victims, and we will arrest suspects. It doesn't matter whether they are documented, undocumented. That's our job," Chief Tully said.
Several council members described recent neighborhood incidents that heightened concern about public perception of law enforcement. Council member Ortiz said residents had been frightened when plainclothes or out‑of‑area deputies were present and some neighbors mistook routine law‑enforcement activity for immigration enforcement. "People are freaking out right now because they think that you guys are ICE," Ortiz said, urging clearer messaging and officer placement to avoid community panic.
Council members also discussed making certain city‑held video footage accessible to the public when questions arise about enforcement practices. Supporters said transparency could build trust and ensure accountability.
The motion to adopt Resolution No. 10548 was moved by Council member Gautron and seconded by Mayor Pro Tem Furman. The council voted in favor, and the resolution was adopted. The resolution text (No. 10548) was presented as reaffirming compliance with state law while emphasizing the city’s public‑safety and community‑trust goals.
The council did not specify additional operational changes to department procedures in the meeting; staff and the police department will continue outreach and messaging to reassure residents about the limits of local authority.
The council’s action concludes the item for this meeting; staff did not propose further amendments at the dais.
