The Codington County Commission voted Feb. 17 to authorize purchases aimed at maintaining county roads, approving a Craftco crack‑sealing machine at $78,415.65 and a Delta skid‑steer trailer at $9,500.
Randy, the highway superintendent, told commissioners the department maintains cracks by opening, cleaning and sealing with rubber and that the existing crack‑sealing unit is 13 years old; he presented two bids, noting the Craftco machine met their operational needs at the lower price. "The price for the Craftco machine comes in at $78,415.65," he said, and recommended the county choose that unit.
Commissioner Gable moved to approve the purchase of the Craftco machine; Commissioner McElhaney seconded. After no further discussion the chair called for the vote and the motion carried on a voice vote.
Randy also requested authorization to buy a trailer to transport the department's skid steer, citing routine uses such as cleaning culverts and replacing culverts. He reported two quotes from a local supplier: a Mid‑Sota trailer for $10,700 and a Delta trailer for $9,500, and recommended the Delta. Commissioner Johnson moved to approve the purchase; Commissioner McElhaney seconded. The commission approved the trailer purchase by voice vote.
Officials said both items were budgeted. The approvals allow highway crews to continue seasonal maintenance work and prepare for expected spring road conditions; no additional funding was requested during the meeting.
