Councilmembers on the New Castle County Land Use Committee opened Tuesday’s session by honoring the late Rev. Jesse Jackson.
"I want to recognize the passing of reverend Jesse Jackson who passed away earlier this morning," Councilmember Hollins said, recounting his role as chair of Delawareans for Jackson in 1984 and describing the campaign’s Rainbow Coalition. Hollins said the campaign helped push Delaware from a caucus to a primary system and credited the University of Delaware with significant local support.
Councilmember Street recalled attending Jackson events in Wilmington and Longshoreman’s Hall and asked the chair for a brief moment of silence "for reverend Jesse Jackson and his memory and and for all he he accomplished." The committee observed a moment of silence and the chair thanked members for their remarks, noting several recent passings of both local and national figures.
The remembrance occupied the committee’s opening 'Other' comments and did not involve any formal votes or agenda changes. The meeting then proceeded to routine business.
