Board approves $15,000 to send Beloit Memorial Jazz Orchestra to Essentially Ellington finals

The School District of Beloit Board of Education approved a $15,000 contribution on Feb. 17 to support the Beloit Memorial Jazz Orchestra’s participation in the Essentially Ellington finals at Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York (April 28–May 3, 2026). The program seeks additional fundraising and has already raised a portion of the trip cost; the director described total trip costs near $50,000 with hotel and transportation the major items.

Board members discussed whether to fund $15,000 or increase the amount to $20,000; the motion approved $15,000 with acknowledgment that the director could return to request an additional $5,000 if needed. Trustees noted the program’s national profile and the district’s historical support for travel by competitive student groups.

What’s next: The orchestra will continue community fundraising through seven scheduled concerts; the board asked to be notified of public concerts and fundraising efforts.
