The Beaufort County Board of Education voted Feb. 17 to approve two local board‑approved courses aimed at advanced Spanish speakers: Spanish for Advanced Language Learners at Hilton Head Island Middle School and at Hilton Head Island High School.
Karen McKenzie, the district’s secondary director of teaching and learning, told the board the courses provide a progression for native Spanish speakers and complement the district’s dual‑language immersion offerings. The high‑school placement will be individualized using the STAMP assessment to match materials to student proficiency and to support students pursuing the Seal of Biliteracy.
Board members praised staff who championed the program and asked procedural questions about rollout and scheduling. The motion to approve the two courses was moved from the operations/academics recommendations and passed without recorded dissent.
What happens next: The courses will be implemented per district curriculum processes; staff said teacher candidates were identified and that materials and placement assessments are in place.
