The Pasco County Board of County Commissioners voted on Feb. 17 to continue consideration of a proposed amendment to Section 802 of the county land development code — the tree preservation and replacement ordinance — to March 24, 2026.
Planning staff described the ordinance update and asked for a continuance to ensure full commission participation. Several residents told the board they supported stronger tree protections. Jean Fahey said the ordinance should "put preservation back into our tree ordinance as a priority," arguing trees mitigate climate impacts, storm damage and deliver community benefits. Julia Bartunick praised saving 20% of the tree canopy and mitigation credits, and asked to be kept informed about any revisions. Jasmine Pork, who owns 10 acres in Hudson, urged commissioners to "stop cutting trees until we make this decision," saying active clearing could eliminate protections before the ordinance takes effect.
Commissioners said they continued P51 in part because one commissioner was out of the county on official business and they wanted full participation at the adoption vote. The item will return to the board on March 24 in New Port Richey for further consideration and possible adoption.
