Senate panel advances bill to protect veteran benefits for foster youths' education and aftercare

Senator Gates presented SB 1594, noting Florida’s large military-connected population and explaining that under current law foster-care agencies can apply for veterans’ benefits on behalf of foster youths but the funds are used as reimbursement for the minor’s care. Gates said the bill would ensure such benefits are set aside for postsecondary education, training and aftercare when a minor transitions out of foster care.

Senator Bracy Davis, a former Department of Children and Families attorney, thanked Gates and said the bill addresses gaps she witnessed in practice when children age out of care. Supporters including Victoria Zepp from family support services waived in. The committee called the roll and reported SB 1594 favorably.
