Committee backs expansion of Line Fund to support health-science workforce and facility improvements

Senator Davis told members that SB 1246 expands the Line Fund’s allowable scope from nursing education to health-science education programs, revises legislative intent to address broader workforce needs, and authorizes matching funds from additional contributors provided the contribution supports an eligible purpose. The bill also permits Line Fund expenditures for student recruitment and facility renovations and designates the Department of Education as lead entity for program eligibility decisions.

Supporters including the Florida Chamber and Valencia College waived in; the sponsor assured the committee there is no fiscal impact on the state because funds already exist in the Line Fund. The committee reported SB 1246 favorably.
