At the Feb. 18 meeting resident Rita Dodd of 242 Fowler Street asked the Cortland City Council for an update on the garbage contract and whether the city will hold spring cleanup this year. City staff said spring and fall cleanup are included in the current bid package and that vendor bids are not due until March, adding that several companies had requested information.
Department reports preceding public comment included brief remarks from finance, police and fire leaders. The police chief thanked council for backing legislation on the agenda; the fire chief discussed previous staffing shortfalls that had halted operations in the past and said recent measures should prevent similar multi-month disruptions. Staff also announced a work session on safety services scheduled for 6 p.m. the following day and said the service director job posting had been revised and posted to multiple accounts to avoid lost applications.
On a separate operational note the mayor publicly thanked Trumbull County Engineer David DeCristo Ferro for offering county assistance with road salt if the city supply ran low before a snow event, calling the help a public-safety relief. No council action was taken on the garbage contract at the meeting.
